I find the stillness of urban landscapes at night stirring - particularly when they are devoid of the depiction of actual people. Every object becomes a partnership between what has been created by one of us and what is to be enjoyed by one of us. There is the feeling of a certain potential about to be recognized. The stage is set. The action is uncertain.
I tend to use a deep depth-of-field combined with long exposures so that viewers are able to peer into the depths of every crevice; the extreme detail in itself is not the goal, but it is through the detail that one is able to wander through these scenes with the least amount of obstruction. The eye can gaze into and stories may emerge from the particulars gathered within every highlight and every shadow.
In this series, the creation of many stories grounded within the actuality of things is important to me.
To a large extent, the poignancy of a photograph is held in a lack of touch. When gazing at a photograph, one peers through the material at something that cannot be felt. Presenting what is not present, the photograph pronounces something to be while uttering a nevermore. There is a tension between intimacy and distance.
These Rorschach Tests are, in part, an exploration of sensuality. Presented small, the images are summoning whispers in which the body is simultaneously exposed and hidden. Tumbling in and out of undulating patterns and textures, curiosity calls the mind to make sense of an image that throws one back onto oneself; perceptions continually shift. The flesh never wholly offers itself, yet it invites exploratory contact. It is both what it is and what you feel it is.
